Internal State Refraction | Acrylic on paper

A small painting on paper exploring how light bends when it moves through water, and how our emotional world can do the same.

Just like refraction shifts the direction of light, the external things we take in can alter our internal state, changing how we see, feel, and move through the world. This piece is a little study of that moment of chang.

I’ve been working on a small series painted directly on collected old postcards, and these two hold something extra meaningful. Both cards still carry handwritten messages from loved ones, small notes, greetings, and moments someone once chose to send across distance.

I love the idea of layering new expression over these fragments of personal history, letting my work sit alongside someone else’s story, decades apart. There’s something beautiful about how these pieces hold both the past and the present at the same time.

Sharing these feels a bit like opening a time capsule, a blend of nostalgia, mystery, and new life. I hope you’re able to feel some of that quiet history woven into the paint.

I’m excited to share that I’ll be part of this year’s exhibition pit on by @richmond_arts_coalition at the @richmondartgallerybc . Presented every two years, ArtRich is a vibrant snapshot of the incredible talent throughout Richmond, the Lower Mainland, and surrounding areas. The 2025 showcase features a mix of drawings, paintings, sculpture, textiles, photographs, and video, all juried by @mf_palad , @chanakova , and @jlally25 .

This is my second time being part of ArtRich, having first shown in 2023, and I’m grateful to return and be included alongside so many talented artists.

where does our consciousness really exist?

And how it is shaped by the world around us…
the places we stand,
the voices that surround us,
the things we carry from moment to moment.

This piece is a small reminder for me that our inner world is not separate, it’s constantly shifting in response to what we live through.

A spirit world, influenced and altered by everything we encounter.

It explores the fluid connection between the ocean’s physical presence and the emotional resonance it holds for us. Living near the coast, I’m constantly aware of its quiet power: how the ocean can seem unchanged, yet is always in motion, always shifting, always altering what it touches.

For this body of work, I’m combining abstract canvas painting with reclaimed materials like nautical charts, yacht blueprints, and ocean-related photographs. Materials that were once used to orient vessels and navigate the literal unknown now become surfaces on which I map internal, emotional navigation.

These works are about memories that drift and reform. Identity that changes shape. That strange space between precision and mystery. Movement. Loss. And the quiet persistence of change.

I can’t wait to share more as we get closer.

I had the chance to step into Monsters in My Head by @ota539 at the @vanartgallery , and it felt like walking through a dream. The space was alive with creatures that seemed both strange and familiar, like they had wandered out of memory or imagination.

There was a sense of wonder and quiet magic in moving through it — playful, haunting, and deeply moving all at once.

Got over to the @tosh.artcentre to see Still by @yvonne.vanderkooi

Felt a real connection to the feeling of nostalgia in these works. Going through old family films and slides was a big part of my childhood, and seeing similar stills brought to life through Yvonne’s oil painting style really hit home.

This piece was painted from a place of stepping way back—from my own thoughts, routines, and expectations. It reflects that moment of zooming out, when the tangled threads of life start to reveal a larger pattern. There’s so much happening all at once—interconnected stories, influences, and unseen forces—that we often miss when we’re too close to our experience.

This painting is a reminder to pause, take a breath, and widen the frame.
